Best Game No One Heard of: Pac-Pix

If there is one game I could say that everyone should play at least once, it would have to be Pac-Pix. It showcases the DS in a fantastic way, and it is a really fun game. But sadly, it sold very poorly, and got only average review scores. Basically, everyone put on their “stupid caps” and didn’t pay any attention to the game.

The major reason for this was the time it was released. It came out in the first six months of the DS’s lifetime. Everyone was still waiting for that one game to justify their purchase for the system, and Pac-Pix didn’t live up to that. If the game came out now, it would be received much better. Right now though, you can’t even find it on GameStop’s website.

But don’t let that fool you. The game is knee-deep in innovation, and has an awesome soundtrack. If you do find it, buy it.

The gameplay consists of you actually drawing Pacman, and watching said drawing come to life. You then have to eat the famed Pacman ghosts with your Picasso-like pizza pie to finish each level. How is this not awesome? Later in the game you would get the ability to create Arrow and Bomb gestures, both helping you solve the game’s many enemy-based puzzles.

It is, in a way, the next-generation of the original Pacman formula. It is simple, but still based on points, just like the arcade original. You don’t go to any crazy ice-filled worlds, or try to reclaim a lost Resonator. Each level looks exactly like the one before it. But it is the enemies and obstacles you find in the levels that make the game interesting.

There is a large variety of enemies, and each level is distinct enough in terms of level layout to say it isn’t pure repetition. The game had a great sense of progression, with some pretty cool bosses at the end of each even-numbered level (out of the possible 12). It even has a great style to it, with each character looking like they come from a comic-strip. Oh, and the music is some of the best I’ve heard on the system.

And I’m sure if you find it used, you’re gonna pay, at the most, $15 for it. I bought the game when it was first released, and I still play it today. It’s possibly one of the greatest DS games I’ve ever played.

You want my advice? I think you should buy this game.
